Telomere Length Testing
Telomeres are the protective caps at the ends of chromosomes that shorten each time a cell divides. Historically viewed as the holy grail of aging diagnostics, commercial telomere testing has fallen out of favor.
Why the Science Shifted
While extremely short telomeres are associated with disease, average telomere length measured from white blood cells is highly variable, influenced by acute stress/illness, and lacks strong predictive power for individual longevity compared to epigenetic clocks.
| Marker | Predictive Power for Mortality |
|---|---|
| Telomere Length | Weak / Moderate |
| DunedinPACE (Epigenetics) | Strong |
Common Mistakes
- Wasting Money: For most individuals, allocating funds toward ApoB testing or a DEXA scan provides vastly more actionable data than a commercial telomere kit.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Are there exceptions?
A: Clinical suspicion of telomere biology disorders (e.g., dyskeratosis congenita) requires specialized flow FISH testing, not direct-to-consumer kits.
